Homophobia in schools in Eastern Europe
On 5th and 6th May a conference "Homophobia in Schools in Eastern Europe" was held in Ljubljana in organisation of the Peace Institute, Department of sociology, University of Ljubljana, Legebitre (Ljubljana) and Institute for sociology (Hungarian Academy of Science) from Budapest.
The goal of conference was to show in which way homosexuality is treated in primary and secondary schools in Eastern Europe and what is the situation in schools relating to LGBT pupils and teachers.
A special guest of conference was Judith Stacey from New York University, and there were presented works and researches of participants from Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Romania, Estonia, Germany and Italy.
Nataša Bijelić (CESI), Amir Hodžić and Gordan Bosanac (CMS, QueerZagreb) presented the work under title "Croatian Heterosexual Universe": Homophobia in Educational system". There were presented examples of hetero-normativity in Croatian educational system which include homophobia of competent educational institutions, but also stigmatizing and discriminatory content of school books – even after Croatia got admonition from European Committee for Social Rights due to homophobia in school books in 2009.
The Conference is a part of European research project "Citizens in Diversity: A Four Nation Study on Homophobia and Fundamental Rights" financed by European Commission (more at: http://www.citidive.eu/).
