Men and gender equality policy
CESI at meeting in Bangkok
From the 25th till the 27th January 2010 a meeting under the topic "Men and Gender Equality Policy Project/IMAGES" was held in Bangkok. Croatia is one of 6 countries to carry out the project called 'Men and Gender Equality Policy', and Nataša Bijelić, a researcher at CESI, also participated in this meeting.
The project was initiated and coordinated by Instituto Promundo from Brazil and International Center for Research on Women from the USA, and other countries, other than Croatia, that are part of this study are Brazil, Mexico, Chile, South Africa and India. The project includes three components, policy analysis related to masculinity, survey on masculinities and interviews with men considered non-typical in relation to present gender norms.
Preliminary survey data of these six countries were presented at the meeting. Each country collected data differently, depending on a specific socio- political context of every country. In Brazil, for example, polltakers frightened for their lives had to have an accompaniment while they were interviewing men in notorious favela of Rio de Janeiro, while in South Africa the usual problem is the poor response of white men.
Every country prepares its own report; therefore, the data on the men from these 6 countries will probably be available by the end of this year.
Many countries consider joining the project and conducting a survey on masculinity, and therefore in a near future we should have results from China, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Cambodia.
