Promotion of the manual and TV video

Promotion of the manual "Sex na Ex"and its accompanying video was held on June 13th 2009 in European Union Information Centre in Zagreb.

"Sex na Ex"  and the video "Parenting's not a game" are a part of CESI project "Youth Matters!" trying to direct attention to the importance and the need of dealing issues of sexual and reproductive health and rights of young but with active participation of the youth itself.

Publication is a piece of work made by a group of young experts who, in association with CESI, analyzed public policy and practice in Croatia and in European Union and then created a handbook which will serve the youth as a mean for further discussion in the area of sexual and reproductive health. Handbook "Sex na Ex" is for those who want to initiate social changes that would eventually lead to improving of sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people.

The video "Parenting's not a game" warns against the problem of teen pregnancies but from the aspect of a 16year old boy.

Most of the time the subject like teen pregnancy is associated with girls implicating that it is girls' problem while the responsibility and involvement of boys stays neglected.

That is the reason why this subject is now being considered from a different, male aspect, in order to highlight shared responsibility. HULAHOP produced the video and the director was Dijana Bolača Paulić.

The publication and the video were presented at the promotion and speakers about the importance of preserving reproductive health of teens were:

Dunja Skoko-Poljak, head of the Projects and programs department, Ministry of Health and Welfare; Prim.dr.sc. Marina Kuzman, manager of Service for youth health and prevention of addiction, Croatian Institute for Public Health; Dana Budisavljević, producer, HULAHOP; Luka Orešković, V.  Gymnasium high school student; Nina Babić, vice-president advisor of Croatian government and Sanja Cesar, CESI, project manager.

Luka Orešković, high school student, pointed out that the knowledge of the reproductive health does not get conveyed properly due to religious and ideological reasons, whereas the youth encounters daily with various problems like sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies and violence.

Prim.dr.sc. Marina Kuzman emphasized the relevance of CESI publication and indicated that it is necessary to open youth counseling centers which would consist of a team of experts to consult teens and where youth would get help immediately. She also emphasized that there should exist a unique policy which would deal with sexuality not only among the youth but among the adults as well.

According to what Dunja Skoko-Poljak, from the Ministry, said and together with CESI and Croatian youth network's petition with the exact request, it was agreed upon founding a working group to open youth counseling centers.

Dana Budisavljević, perennial CESI associate, spoke of possible challenges involving gender equality subject. Making subjects like gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people into an audiovisual medium requires a different way of thinking.

Nina Babić excused the vice-president, who because of other obligations had to cancel her appearance. However, with the announcement of her arrival, she confirmed how relevant this subject is as well as her readiness to deal with questions concerning teenagers.

Handbook "Sex na Ex" after thorough analysis suggests these recommendations to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people. It is of outmost importance that Croatia ensures:

-         social-political agreement about the importance of health care and respect for sexual and reproductive rights of young people

-         making sexual education a compulsory subject

-         youth friendly clinics and counseling for sexual and reproductive health

-         specially educated and qualified staff to work with young people concerned about their health and sexuality

-         political readiness and financial aid for bringing forward and conducting policy that will grant appropriate care of sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people

Project "Youth Matters!" is financed by European Comission-Phare 2006 and the city of Zagreb.
