Conclusions of the conference "Overcoming Inequality - the Position of Women in the Labour Market"

A conference which was attended by representatives and representatives of the Croatian Parliament, the Croatian Employment Service, the mechanisms for implementing gender mainstreaming, ombudsman's offices, ministries, profit sector, political parties, courts, unions, civil society organisations and media took place in Zagreb on 9th of March, 2010.

The conference which was held on the occasion of International Women's Day, 8th of March, was organized by CESI and was financially supported by SIPU International, TACSO office in Croatia.
Participating in the one-day work based on conference's presentations and discussions the participants brought the following conclusions:

1. It is necessary to evaluate the implementation of measures of national strategies implementing gender mainstreaming, particularly in the areas of labour and employment of women.

2. It is necessary to better align educational programs with labour market needs in both formal and informal as well as further education and training.

3. Provide sufficient resources for strengthening women's entrepreneurship and self-employment including social entrepreneurship.

4. It is vital to the implementation of measures to improve the position of women in the labour market in their local communities, with emphasis on ethnic minority women and women with disabilities.

5. It is necessary to analyze the needs of women members of national minorities and women with disabilities to develop quality measures and programmes for their greater involvement in the labour market as well as removing barriers to their participation in the labour market.

6. A better cooperation between all stakeholders (institutions, private sector, trade unions, civil society) is required in the implementation and adoption of National Policy Measures to promote gender equality and other strategies and measures concerning employment.

7. A greater focus for all stakeholders (institutions, profit sector, trade unions, civil society organizations) is required to work on reducing the unequal position of women in the private sphere, through special measures for better coordination of professional and family life.
